The 5 traditional festivals of Trevignano

Trevignano Romano marks the year with five deeply felt celebrations. The Feast of Sant'Antonio Abate (17 January) opens the season with the "focarone" bonfire on the beach. Carnival fills the squares in February. The Feast of San Bernardino (20 May), the patron saint, brings three days of processions, marinated fish festival and fireworks. The most evocative moment is the 15 August procession for the Assumption: the statue of the Madonna travels on a motorboat along the lake, escorted by dozens of illuminated boats, with fireworks at midnight. The season closes with smaller events and autumn food fairs.

Feast of Sant'Antonio Abate

The first major tradition of the year. Sant'Antonio Abate is the protector of domestic animals, and on 17 January the village holds the blessing of dogs, cats and any animal guests bring along. In the evening the "focarone" is lit, a large bonfire on the central beach of Via della Rena (in front of the Elementary Schools).

What to expect

  • Blessing of animals (morning)
  • Live music and juggling shows
  • Cheese-making workshop with tasting of traditional local products
  • Evening bonfire with music and mulled wine

When to go: afternoon for the blessing, evening for the bonfire (around 18:00).

Trevignano Carnival

Mask parades, floats, children's entertainment, music and stalls in the historic centre. A heartfelt local tradition mostly attended by village families, but with the charm of an authentic small-town Carnival, far from the big city parades.

Feast of San Bernardino of Siena

San Bernardino is the patron saint of Trevignano Romano, celebrated on 20 May. Tradition tells that the Saint saved the population from a feared Saracen invasion. Today it is the village's most important festival, with three days of religious and civic celebrations.

Typical programme

  • Solemn procession through the village, in some editions also on the lake by boat
  • Marinated fish festival (now in its 50th edition) with food stands
  • Fishing competition on Lake Bracciano
  • Brass band parade
  • Market and stalls
  • Children's games and card tournaments
  • Final fireworks display (Saturday 20 May, around 23:00)

When to go: the entire weekend of 20 May. For the fireworks, claim a spot on the lakefront from 22:30.

Feast of the Assumption — Nighttime procession on the lake

The Ferragosto procession is the most evocative event on Lake Bracciano. A tradition of more than 60 years that draws thousands of visitors every year. The statue of the Assumed Mary, kept in the church of the same name in the historic centre, is carried on a motorboat along the lake, accompanied by sacred music.

Dozens of illuminated boats follow in procession, creating a magical effect on the lake's dark water. The procession starts around 21:45 and lasts about an hour; immediately after, around midnight, the great fireworks display over the lake takes place.

How to experience it best

  • Arrive early: by 19:30 to find a spot on the lakefront. Streets in the centre are closed to traffic
  • Dinner before the procession at one of the village restaurants — book ahead
  • Recommended position: central lakefront or Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III
  • Bring a light jumper: even in August the lakeside evening can be cool

When to go: the procession is on the evening of 15 August. It's best to arrive on the 14th or the morning of the 15th and stay at least one night. To sleep close to the events, La Casetta del Borgo is inside the historic centre, 50 metres from the lake.

Summer events and food fairs

In the warm months Trevignano comes alive with smaller but enjoyable events:

  • International Street Food Festival — 76th national stop, 9th edition, with international cuisine specialities
  • Lakefront concerts on July and August weekends
  • Open-air cinema in the square during the summer season
  • Craft markets on the lakefront
  • Sailing regattas organised by the local sailing club
